Before Red Hot Chili Peppers, he played in the band The Weirdos.
Red Hot Chili Peppers[]
He and his former Weirdos bandmate Dix Denny auditioned for Red Hot Chili Peppers at the same time. He passed the audition, but Dix Denny didn't. He replaced Jack Irons.
He served as the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers from 1983 to 1986 and played on their first two albums, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Freaky Styley. He also played on the The Uplift Mofo Party Plan Demos, but not on the album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan itself.
He was replaced by Jack Irons.

In 2012, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band. He played drums on the song "Give It Away" as part of the induction ceremony. This was the first time he had played with Anthony and Flea in 26 years.
